Hypnotic Thickleaf

—  A prime example of the rich flora of the island of La Palma are the thick-leaved plants.

Kike Navarro shows us the example of the Canary Island rosette thickleaf (Aeonium canariense). Plants of this genus can grow as herbs or small shrubs, for there are many species, subspecies, varieties and hybrids.

With their firm, thick-fleshed leaves and hard stem, rosette thickleaves are perfectly adapted to an extremely dry climate. During periods of low rainfall, they live off the water they have stored in their leaves.

Even though most species prefer rocks and stony slopes, this does not mean that they do not also live in wetter areas.

Aeoniums can be seen growing right out of rocks and rooting in the smallest crevices.

Outside the flowering season, the rosettes with their special leaf arrangement are worth a close look. They consist of several layers of spirally arranged leaves and have an almost hypnotic effect.
