The poinsettia – a symbol of Christmas and joy
— The time from Christmas until the Three Kings is similar to the German pre-Christmas period in Spain and on the Canary Islands.
Thus, on La Palma Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar bring the presents on 6 January. It's a magical time and the poinsettias have made themselves pretty for the occasion. Kike Navarro sends us this beautiful photo to symbolise the festivities.
If there is one plant that is synonymous with Christmas in many countries in Europe, America and also on La Palma, it is undoubtedly Euphorbia pulcherrima. All year round, the poinsettia's leaves are green, but when Christmas approaches, the bracts turn bright red and fall off after New Year.
On the island, this process is delayed because it is closer to the equator, and it is not unusual to still see its cheerful colour at Easter. A warm climate is required for the cultivation of poinsettia. In cold areas it usually dies after losing its leaves. On La Palma, however, the plant grows like trees for years and can reach a height of more than three metres.
This year, the magic of Christmas is stronger than ever, because with the end of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, the wish of all palmeros seems to have come true.
Kike's picture shows a tiny drop of water on the tip of a leaf, which forms a lens through its refraction. It allows us to focus on the flower in the background. He says it reminds him of the typical snow globes with their Christmas and winter motifs.
We wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2022
