Chestnut season on La Palma
— With his photo, Kike Navarro reminds us today of two important festivals in November.
One is the Day of the Dead (1.11.) and the other is St. Martin's Day (11.11.). Both have a family and festive character that is unthinkable without roasted chestnuts accompanied by the young wine of the year and traditional sweets.
Families are often seen gathering chestnuts by the roadside, and in some markets we find chestnut sellers roasting them at stalls. Then their unmistakable scent, reminiscent of autumn, fills the surroundings.
On La Palma, 1 November (All Saints' Day) is dedicated to the memory of the dead. Thus it is also called "día de los finados" or "finaos" for short (Day of the Dead). Its tradition goes back to the 16th century. In the past, the celebration was accompanied by liqueur, chestnuts, wine, the sounds of guitars and timples and stories about the deceased. Today, relatives, friends and neighbours still gather on the evening of 31 October to chat. The next day, the Palmeros visit the cemeteries to decorate the graves especially beautifully with flowers.
On St. Martin's Day, too, the young wine is tasted. Of course with chestnuts (roasted or boiled), often with a piece of grilled meat and of course with many memories of times gone by.
Kike took the atmospheric photo on the Carretera de las Mimbreras. It connects the municipalities of Barlovento and Garafía and is one of the most beautiful roads on the island.
