La Palma: Impressions from the West Coast

– This time we glide with Ulrich Roth on the excursion boat over the glittering Atlantic waves, accompanied by the pleasantly rippling guitar music of Klangraum Mainz.

In the harbour of Tazacorte we go on board.

We head north along the steep cliffs to a place where the Atlantic has eaten into the soft volcanic rock and formed a grotto, the Cueva Bonita. In the sea cave we admire the fantastic light and colour spectacle of the afternoon sun. We continue to Pirate's Cove, which has become one of the most popular film and photo motifs on the isla bonita. In the large, open cave in the cliff of Tijarafe, people have built small houses for themselves in which they spend the weekends or the entire summer. When there were no roads on La Palma, the "Porís de La Candelaria" was a port from which all kinds of goods were shipped.

We continue to Playa de la Veta beach, which, like Pirate's Cove, would otherwise be difficult to reach on foot via a steep flight of steps.

The sand in the bay is pleasantly soft. You have to be careful here with the strong current and the rapidly falling seabed. Further north, in the harbour of Puntagorda, you will also find (weekend) dwellings, partly built into the rock and equipped with solar panels for electricity. In the past, small ships were also loaded in the Puerto de Puntagorda to travel to the island's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma.

On La Palma's coast you can observe baleen whales, toothed whales, various dolphins and turtles.

At the end of the boat trip, we head south once again to the wide sea to spot marine mammals. And indeed, small dolphins appear and accompany our boat for a while.

We pass the impressive Angustias Gorge, which leads to the Caldera de Taburiente. Near there is also the spot with the most hours of sunshine in Europe: Puerto de Tazacorte. Breakwaters protect the bay of the seaside resort and make the beach particularly child-friendly.

The video was produced before the volcanic eruption in summer 2021.

Other attractions that can recently be seen from the excursion boats are, of course, the new headlands "fajanas" that formed off the coast when the lava flow there plunged into the sea, and the view of the volcano on Cumbre Vieja itself.

On the way to the landing stage, we pass the Playa Nueva beach directly in front of the marina. It lies somewhat offset to the north below the village of Villa de Tazacorte and can only be reached by land via the coastal path "paseo litoral", which leads through the banana plantations and then over a newly built staircase that leads down from the Mirador de Tazacorte viewpoint to the bathing area.

The boat trips are suitable for all ages and take about two to three hours.

On the west coast of La Palma, dolphins and whales can be seen all year round. Some boats also have underwater visibility.

If you get seasick quickly, it is recommended to find a central spot and fix your gaze on the horizon. Ginger - in biscuits or brewed - is also said to help against motion-sickness; travel tablets are definitely reliable.
