Glass art of a special kind

— A few days ago, Kike Navarro was lucky enough to spend a Sunday morning with Dominic Kessler-Kaspar and Wladyslaw Gozdz.

The two master glassblowers run their studio Artefuego in Argual. It is located in the pretty Plaza de Sotomayor, which is known for the Los Llanos flea market.

Dominic and Wladyslaw showed the photographer how they make a variety of everyday and/or decorative items using traditional glassmaking techniques. Kike's photo depicts one of the working steps on the red-hot glass body. The blowing and shaping is done without prefabricated moulds.

It is almost mesmerising to watch the 1200º C furnace heat the coloured glass until it melts and the glass artists then masterfully give it shape.

The fascinating colours and shapes of the unique pieces are created by the movements and intensity of the blowing. In the process, Dominic and Wladyslaw combine their experience of traditional Bohemian-Silesian and Polish glassblowing with the lava rock of the island.

With Artefuego, Kike Navarro shows us a special place to find a unique gift or souvenir of the island of La Palma.
