The tides on La Palma

— Today Kike Navarro takes us to the east side of the Isla Bonita with his photo.

The picture was taken at sunset in Los Cancajos. It shows one of the small bays further north of the main beaches.

The tides are also noticeable in the Atlantic. Every day, the sea level rises and falls twice. Each time it creates "patterns" in the black sand and erases them again. New shapes with light reflexes and reflections are created again and again.

In this case, it is low tide. The sea is empty, as they say here. It is even particularly empty, because on the day the picture was taken it was spring tide. During the days of the new and full moon, the tides are particularly strong. You can tell how high the water is rising by the change in colour of the rock. The small arch of rock you can see at the bottom of the picture is then completely covered.

The bay shown here is particularly popular with parents with children. It is sheltered from the wind and invites them to play. Another special feature of these beaches is that they can be used all year round. The water temperature on La Palma rarely drops below 20º C, even in winter.
