La Palma: Holidays are possible

You have to find someone who can do what La Palma can do.

At about 700 square kilometres, the Canary Island is about the size of Hamburg, but has more than 1,000 kilometres of hiking trails. This mountainous island is also ideal for fit cyclists and divers, who can dive in an underwater graveyard, among other things.

Adrenaline junkies will certainly get a kick out of the zip-line flight near Puntagorda, which opened in July. But La Palma also has a lot to offer for those who prefer to take it easy: charming villages, richly decorated churches, artisanal rum and cigar making, good food and stargazing, for example. La Palma was named the first UNESCO Starlight Reserve in 2012.

The Milky Way can also be seen from some hotel windows on clear nights, but it's even better from Roque de los Muchachos, where a new visitor centre was added to the observatory at the end of 2021. At 2,426 metres, Roque de los Muchachos is the highest mountain on La Palma.

However, it was the Tajogaite that put La Palma on the personal map of many Germans: The volcano erupted in September 2021 and spat out lava that spread for kilometres, burying some agricultural land and more than 1,500 buildings.

Although the most popular tourist resorts, such as Puerto Naos and La Bombilla, are still closed due to the presence of CO2 gases, "tourists can spend their holidays in all other regions without any worries," explains Ulrich Roth. The German has been living on La Palma for more than 20 years and manages more than 270 holiday homes through his company La Palma Travel.

Together with touristik aktuell, Roth is currently looking for German travel agencies as premium partners and trains them in various webinars on La Palma. A familiarisation trip to the island will also take place from 30 November to 4 December. More information online at touristik aktuell, keyword La Palma.
