The Sugarcane and Rum Museum of San Andrés
Ron Aldea
Shortly after the Spanish conquest, the area of San Andrés was converted into a productive cultivation area for sugarcane, thanks to the unhindered flow of the river Río de Los Sauces, then.
Prosperity brought to the village was based on the export of the "sweet cane" and stately mansions still testify to this wealth.
Transportation of sugarcane, honey and wine to the small harbour Puerto Espíndola by using mules was a laboring work. From there, goods took a long journey over the Atlantic Ocean.
In the 17th century San Andrés became less important, but sugarcane and moreover rum made out of it, have continued to play an important role.
The former sugar mill „Trapiche El Melonar“ was built at the beginning of the 19th century and since the 1950's has been owned by the Destilerías Aldea.
It is a well-known distillery with a deep-rooted rum making tradition.
Since the beginning of the 19th century Don Manuel Quevedo Alemán, a well-respected Sugar and Master Rum Maker, instead of using molasses as usual, distilled the pure sugarcane juice and produced fine liqueurs.
Until today Jose Manuel Quevedo Hernández and his children have been carrying on the buiness in remembrance of the first Master Rum-Makers.
From September 2015 they expanded their family project by the „Centro de interpretación de la caña de azúcar y del ron“.
