From 1995 to 2013 the Restaurant in the North-West of the Isla Bonita already had been an Insider's Tip
In Santo Domingo, the main town of the district Garafía, the restaurant "El Bernegal" surprises with its creative Canary and international cuisine.
Excellent food, an extraordinary dapper ambience and excellent service made the restaurant known all over the island La Palma. Then, the former operator had to close.
For about three years the Bernegal fell into a deep sleep, until José Dalvis Rodríguez Rodríguez reopened the restaurant in March 2016.
For Dalvis it felt like returning to his roots, as he has been working in this restaurant for almost 18 years side by side with the former owner and cook, Domingo Castellanos.
Besides his professional education Dalvis also worked in different restaurant kitchens on La Palma, where he deepened and expanded his knowledge.
"If I wasn't a cook, I would have decided for farming", Dalvis says
That is why he especially focusses on fresh and local products. Cheese, meat and fresh fish come from Dalvis' home parish Garafia or the nearest surrounding.
Each ingredient has its peculiarity and Delvis is passionate about sensing it in order to bring it out in his new creations.
The menu offers more international dishes than typical Canary meals, which has always been the case in Bernegal.
Amongst others French, Italian and Basque cuisine is served. Vegetarians are also offered a good selection.
Some of the restaurant's specialities are banana omelette, spinach croquettes with salad "Tropical", Tournedos Bernaise and nougat ice cream gives the meal a finishing touch.
Wines from the local Bodegas like Piedra Jurada, El Nispero, Talguén, Viñarda round off the taste. Moreover, there is a selection of wines from the Spanish mainland like Ribera del Duero and Rioja.
Dalvis' philosophy includes making his staff feel like home.
At the end of the day, the entire team benefits and so do the guests, who appreciate the friendly and attentive service.
The same way Dalvis lovingly prepares his dishes, he chose decorations and colours for the small dining rooms.
Warm tints on the walls match the original colour and harmoniously blend with the tiles in the Andalusian style, which decorate the patio with its inviting sitting group.
Those who prefer just to enjoy a drink or a coffee are welcome to sit down in the small bar, which is located in a separate room and accessible by the side entry.
By the way, Bernegal is the Canary name for a special water filter, which can be found in the restaurant's logo and of course also in the interior.
Pictures on the wall continually change, as Bernegal offers all artists the possibility to exhibit their works of art.
Currently replicas of the rock engravings from the Archaeological Park La Zarza are displayed. They are made of clay and can also be bought at the farmer's market of Puntagorda.
The Restaurant Bernegal on the quiet main road of Santo Domingo is the perfect place to indulge your palate.
The small town can be discovered during a pleasant walk
If preferred, you can enjoy long hiking tours through the gorgeous coastal landscape.
Rock engravings of native Palmerian people are another attraction nearby and so is the former major harbour of Santo Domingo.
