The small square „Placeta de Borrero“
in the centre of the Island Capital Santa Cruz is a popular meeting point
It has already been there since the second half of the 16th century and is surrounded by beautiful heritage-protected houses of various styles.
Restaurante Placeta opened its doors already in 1985. Located in a typical Canary 18th century house, the back side of the building forms part of the famous "typical balconies" of the Avenida Máritima.
In 2007 the current owner David Leiva Ruiz took over the restaurant.
At the age of 14, David, who originally comes from, discovered his passion for gastronomy.
David Leiva Ruiz wants his guests to feel comfortable, which, besides of the good quality of the meals, requires a courteous service.
In the heart of the old downtown, away from traffic noise and exhaust, the restaurant on the „placeta“ with its fountain and lush flower beds on the balcony is a calm anchor.
In the Restaurante La Placeta the merely female kitchen staff freshly prepares each ordered meal.
Therefore, for all main dishes there is a 30 minute waiting time.
However beef fillet tips in Cognac cream sauce with fresh mushrooms and homemade French fries or rack of lamb from the oven with roasted potatoes are worth the wait.
Some of the tempting desserts are classics like „bienmesabe“, and innovative creations like Baileys with white chocolate cream and coffee-Granité or chocolate-volcano ice cream.
From breakfast to dinner - all dishes can be served on the terrace.
There are quick snacks like toasts or Tapas as well as homemade cakes like warm apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce or bee sting cake stich.
If you prefer a wider choice you can select your favourite dish from the restaurant menu, where you also find vegetarian and vegan food.
Where Tradition and Modern Go Hand in Hand
In the small Bistro, inside the house, old walls, roofs and the charm of the original building have been preserved.
It is a cosy place to enjoy a meal or have a drink. However, you can also just stop by and take a look.
One speciality is the „barraquito con licor“, a coffee with sweet condensed milk and liqueur.
In both dining rooms, on the upper level, century old heartwood beams made of the Canary pinewood combine traditional and modern design.
In front of the small room there is a balcony with a sea view as part of the „balcones típicos“ of the Avenida Marítima.
The friendly service team of the Restaurante La Placeta also has a bilingual staff.
Besides the gastronomic range they also explain nearby sights and monuments to the guests.
David Leiva Ruiz deserves special praise, not only for running an excellent restaurant.
With a surprising invitation for a week-long cruise he expressed special thanks to his staff for their commitment, especially during the festival week celebrating the Descent of the Virgin 2015.
David offered everyone the opportunity to treat himself and herself for an entire week and get to know Barcelona, Genoa, Rome, Palermo (Sicily), Malta and Majorca.
