The Market Hall of Santa Cruz de La Palma
„Plaza de Mercado“ is written on the entrance of the capital's market hall
Originally, this was the market place and its name dates back to the time when the inner courtyard of the worth seeing building was still uncovered.
The historic edifice had already existed in the 16th century. At that time it served as a hospital. Wards were in the lower part "lonja".
The courtyard was opened to the top and it is said that there was also a spring or a fountain, where patients were taken to.
The chapel was originally located where today there is the Teatro Chico, a small theater and cinema,
In 1817 a fire raged in the hospital and installations were relocated to the centuries-old Hospital de Nuestra Señora de Dolores.
„lonja“
In 1884 the restored rooms gained their importance as a market place.
The term „lonja“ by Palmerian word usage has several meanings: either a lower part of a house is meant or a side room with access from the house, in which tools or provisions are stored.
However, also rooms where specific works are carried out - and even fishmongers sometimes are called "lonja".
In 2001 a complete restauration took place in order to comply with the strict conditions of the health authority.
The floor was removed and repaired, everything was cleaned as well as refrigeration chambers and sanitary facilities installed.
The „mercado local“ or the „recova“, how local people call the market meanwhile shelters 13 „lonjas“ and 12 stands in the courtyard.
The roof decorated with glass windows has converted the market place of Santa Cruz de La Palma into a market hall.
Products from the Island have priority
Meat, fish, cheese, fruits, vegetable, herbs, flowers, baked goods, confectionary products and sauces fill the stands.
In addition, products from America like the Malanga or Venezuelan specialities are offered.
A special refreshment is the sugar cane juice, that is served freshly squeezed.
In Spain and on Cuba it is called „guarapo“.
A bar makes sure you don't miss out on culinary treats like coffee and Tapas.
The market hall of Santa Cruz de La Palma is opened Monday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm and Saturday until 3:00 pm.
Great place! Friendly service and helpful. Great stand with sugar cane juice (really good mojitos)
and bought salted cod fish to take to Denmark. Was there a couple of times for cod fish and mojitos
