Colourful Markets with a Varied Range of Products
More than Bananas are grown on La Palma
The Canary island La Palma is known for its unique laurel and pine forests.
Therefore, it is also called „isla verde“, the green island. In the coastal areas, particularly in the dry south and the south west, the green bananaplantations are the ones that stick out.
Throughout the whole year there are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetable.
Thanks to the mild climate and the diversified growing regions fruits like papayas, mangoes, prickley pears or loquat harvested according to the season.
Oranges and grapes taste sun-ripened and sweet.
Tomatoes taste like tomatoes and potatoes are available fresh all year-round. Apples and pears are crunchy like the fresh biting autumn air in the north of La Palma.
Fresh food supply requires a short distance between the farmer and the consumer.
More and more consumers and also restaurants prefer regional products on the market stands to the supermarket offerings.
And this also benefits the inhabitants of the island, agriculture becomes more important and jobs can be created.
In Santa Cruz and Los Llanos you find the market hall „recova“, which opens its doors from Monday to Saturday.
Moreover various „mercados“ or „mercadillos“ scattered around the island have been established, offering very different opening hours.
At the market stalls fruits, vegetable and regional products like cheese, wine, sweets, baked goods, mojo-sauces, honey and traditional handicrafts are offered.
At the „rastros“ (flea markets) you will find quite a lot of bargains, quirky stuff, old and new things and often life music and children's activities.
