Myriam Bartholemy and Holger Ilg arrived in 2006 on the Canary Island La Palma carrying along a vision: Someday they would want to run their own restaurant.
However, they first had to establish themselves...
Holger already arranged from Germany to work in the kitchen of the Restaurant Franchipani.
Holger cooked with Heidy van de Forst in the kitchen, while Mimi worked as a waitress and served the guests.
Only two years later, Myriam and Holger opened their Restaurant "Carpe Diem" in the historic centre of Villa de Tazacorte.
The restaurant, located in the pedestrian zone of the town centre, waited for a new tenant after the previous operator's wife was transferred to another island and they were forced to shut down the two-story restaurant. At that time, the restaurant was called La Oveja Negra (the black sheep).
In recent years, the charming small town of Villa de Tazacorte has underwent an interesting development...
Not only does the Carpe Diem enhance the historic townscape with its lovely lanes and places, by now there are also two galleries, several bars and restaurants and members of the La Palma Wine Club meet on a monthly basis in one of the spruce old town houses.
Healthy & Delicious
Holger's Crossover Cuisine combines Palmerian, Mediterranean, oriental and Asian elements.
Regional - national - international: although preparation is mostly locally oriented, his creations don't know any boundaries...
Traditional dishes and ingredients from the region are innovatively interpreted according to chef Holger's taste.
Thus, for instance rabbit meat from La Palma is prepared as Lasagne and the typical Barraquito (multi-layered coffee with liqueur, milk foam and sweet milk) is served as a dessert cream.
Newly interpreted: Spanish dates wrapped in bacon baked in filo dough. The bacon appears as a light, white foam - simply delicious!
With this creation Carpe Diem already won gold during the Tapas competition "Ruta del Gallo", which takes place in the Aridane Valley once a year.
For three times Carpe Diem has already taken the first place!
Regular participation in those competitions provides even more motivation to continue creating new dishes.
But also the changing weekly menu has always something new to discover.
The menu board shows seasonal specialities, that are additionally offered from Wednesday to Monday.
Besides the fine wine from the mainland like Ribera del Duero or Rioja, wines from selected Bodegas of the island are served.
There is the "rosado" (rosé wine) from the Bodega Durazno from Barlovento as well as the magnificent "tinto barrica", a cask aged Palmerian red wine that offers something extraordinary...
From the Bio-Bodega Tagalguén from Garafía we find: Phi, ecológico blanco and 100%.
While Holger manages the kitchen, Myriam is in charge of the organisation and attends the guests, her brother gives her a hand.
And waiter Franky already has been working with Carpe Diem for four years, and so do the kitchen assistants.
A positive atmosphere motivates the team to offer their guests exactly what they would expect themselves from a good restaurant.
Which are: a friendly service, a homely atmosphere and of course - unlimited culinary pleasure, that delights body and soul.
Exhibitions and readings provide additional spiritual enrichment. Myriam and Holger set great personal store in the expression of their love for literature and art.
